The trade deadline is such a beautifully chaotic time for every sport. That definitely includes baseball. This year is a different than others. This is the first year where there will only be one trade deadline for baseball. There will be no going out and getting Justin Verlander at the end of August like the Astros did a few years ago. The time to decide whether or not your team is a contender or a seller is now.

Yesterday we had our second trade of the deadline. I am counting the Stroman deal in on this. The Indians, Reds, and Padres all agreed to a deal last night that sent Trevor Bauer to the Reds, Yasiel Puig, Scott Moss, Franmil Reyes, Logan Allen and Victor Nova to the Indians and Taylor Trammell to the Padres. The Indians made out pretty nicely here, they needed outfield help and they got two Major League talents in Reyes and Puig along with Moss, Allen and Nova to help bolster the farm system. The Reds went out and got the starter they needed to help strengthen their rotation. The Padres got only one player out of the deal but they got one of the better prospects from the Reds organization, Trammell was named to the futures game in year, though his struggles in Double-A seem to be worrisome he could very easily turn it around in San Diego’s farm system where there is a lot of deep talent for him to compete with.

I like the trade for the Indians. The Padres were the team that ended up giving up the most for what seems to be little in return. It makes sense for the Indians to go out and get outfield help all while making the most of the value from Trevor Bauer. Reyes provides them with a young talent with plenty of control years, while Puig helps with the teams immediate needs in the outfield as well. Now why the Reds would go out and get Bauer for half a year is beyond me. They get rid of Puig and prospects to have a guy come in and maybe help them get to the Wild Card? The Indians pretty much bamboozled the Reds here and the Padres got a mild return for giving up a pretty good MLB ready player that was preforming fairly well.

It was not the best trade made from all sides but the Indians got significantly better by adding two bats to their lineup. I am sure that these teams are not done making moves. Maybe the Reds will trade Bauer again to the highest bidder today. But time is ticking only 4 hours left till the end of the deadline.
